Canteen, 20 Gloucester Road, Brighton

HistoryEdit

As its name and the wall cannon suggests it was associated with the Headquarters of the 1st Sussex Volunteer Artillery across the road and it replaced an earlier inn of the same name.[1] Owned/operated by Kidd and Hotblack from 1876-1926 then Tamplins from 1926 until its closure in 1963.[2] It was demolished in December 1966 for a future extension of the Southern Publishing Company’s premises.[3]

LandlordsEdit

Directories show the landlord to be John Lovell Wheeler from 1890-1938.[4]
